What Action for Democracy Does in Brazil

Brazil's democracy has proven resilient - but resilience should never be taken for granted.

In recent years, Brazil has experienced intense political polarization, attacks on democratic institutions, disinformation campaigns, political violence, and efforts to undermine trust in elections. At the same time, millions of Brazilians have continued to organize, vote, advocate, and defend democratic values.

Democracy is strongest when citizens participate.

As Brazil approaches another critical electoral cycle, supporting independent democratic organizations has never been more important.

That is why Action for Democracy partners with organizations across Brazil that are helping citizens participate in public life, engage with democratic institutions, and build stronger, more resilient communities.

This includes initiatives that:

  • Increase voter participation and civic engagement

  • Reach underrepresented communities

  • Combat disinformation and political manipulation

  • Strengthen democratic culture and public trust

  • Encourage informed participation in elections

  • Build long-term democratic resilience

Our approach is simple:

Local organizations understand their communities best.

Our role is to help them expand their reach, strengthen their impact, and connect with a broader democratic movement.

Our Impact in Brazil

Democracy is strengthened by local action.

Over the past 4 years, Action for Democracy has partnered with Brazilian civil society organizations working to increase civic participation, engage underrepresented communities, and strengthen democratic resilience.

Together, our partners have:

📈 Helped organizations reach more than 30 million people through voter engagement and civic participation initiatives on social media.

🗳️ Financed targeted campaigns to reduce the abstention of youth and women  resulting in more than 5 million  young voters registered—largest youth electorate in decades.

🌎 Funded delegation of 20 Brazilian civil society leaders to Washington, DC to advocate for early recognition of election results.

💡 Developed innovative approaches to counter disinformation, strengthen democratic culture, and encourage informed participation.

These numbers tell only part of the story.

Behind every project are citizens who became more engaged, communities that gained a stronger voice, and organizations that were able to expand their impact at critical moments for Brazilian democracy.

As Brazil approaches another important electoral cycle, the need for a strong, independent civil society remains as urgent as ever.

Are You a Brazilian Living Abroad?

Make Your Voice Heard.

One of the most powerful ways to support democracy in Brazil is to vote.

Brazilian citizens living abroad can vote in presidential elections and play an important role in shaping the country's future, regardless of where they live.

Whether you have been living abroad for months or decades, your vote remains an important connection to Brazil's democratic future.
